Katie Morris
Intuitive ceramic artist making functional pottery and figurative sculpture.
About
Katie Morris is a ceramic artist based in Placerville who makes functional and decorative pottery, including plates, bowls and cups, alongside smaller figurative sculpture. Her functional pieces mix wheel-thrown and handbuilt work. "Clay draws me in, invites me to create in an intuitive way," she writes, describing herself as an intuitive, dreamlike maker.
Morris first worked with clay in high school, studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and Wichita State University, and earned a BFA from Alfred University. She spent her twenties making mostly large figurative sculpture, held residencies at the Mendocino Art Center and the Sonoma Community Center, and assisted with a summer workshop at Penland School of Crafts. Today she sells directly at art fairs and markets around Northern California.
